Crop an Image to Any Aspect Ratio, in Your Browser

An aspect ratio is the shape of a picture: width divided by height. Instagram, Etsy, YouTube and print labs each expect particular shapes, and if your photo doesn’t match, the platform crops it for you — often cutting off the part you cared about. This tool lets you choose that crop yourself. Set the ratio, place the frame, and the file you download has a pixel size that matches the ratio (to the pixel where the numbers allow it; the panel tells you when rounding is involved).

It works on one photo or a batch of up to 20. Every image gets the same ratio and starts with the largest centred frame, so for product shots taken on a tripod you can often download the ZIP without touching anything. When one photo needs a different framing, click its thumbnail and drag.

How to crop an image to an aspect ratio

  1. Add images. Drop or select JPG, PNG, WebP, iPhone HEIC or AVIF files. You can also paste a screenshot.
  2. Pick a ratio. Use a preset (Instagram, Etsy, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9…), type a custom ratio such as 2.35:1, or press ⇄ to flip portrait and landscape.
  3. Place the frame. Drag to move, drag a corner to resize; the ratio stays locked. Tap or click outside the frame to jump it there. The thirds grid helps line up horizons and eyes.
  4. Choose the size. Keep the crop’s own pixels, set the longest side, or type an exact size like 1080×1350.
  5. Download. Save the current image, or all of them as a ZIP.

Which aspect ratio should you use?

  • 1:1 (square) — profile pictures, marketplace grids, album art, the classic Instagram post.
  • 4:5 (portrait) — Instagram’s 1080×1350 portrait post; a taller post fills more of the phone screen in the feed. Also the shape of an 8×10 in print.
  • 3:4 — what most phone cameras shoot in portrait, and since 2025 the tallest feed shape Instagram keeps uncropped (1080×1440).
  • 4:3 — the same phone-camera shape in landscape; a common choice for Etsy’s first listing photo.
  • 3:2 — the native shape of most DSLR and mirrorless sensors, and of a 4×6 in print.
  • 16:9 — widescreen video frames, slides and monitors (1920×1080, 3840×2160).
  • 9:16 — full-screen vertical for Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts (1080×1920).
  • 1.91:1 — the widest landscape shape Instagram keeps in the feed (1080×566).

Etsy listing photos: what Etsy says

Etsy’s image requirements page (checked October 2026) recommends listing photos at least 2000 px wide and high, says the first photo should be landscape or square, warns that files over 1 MB may not finish uploading, and notes that transparent parts of a PNG appear black on Etsy. It does not name one required ratio, and it crops thumbnails to square, portrait and landscape views, so leave space around the product. The Etsy preset here uses 4:3 landscape, a common choice, and its exact size is 2700×2025. Export JPG for Etsy so transparent areas become white rather than black, then use Compress to KB if the file is over 1 MB.

Instagram feed and Story sizes

According to Instagram’s Help Center, feed photos keep their shape when the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, and are stored at up to 1080 px wide; other shapes are cropped by the app. That is why the Instagram presets here use a 1080 px width: 1080×1080, 1080×1350, 1080×1440, 1080×566, and 1080×1920 for Stories. Choose Exact size to get those dimensions, or keep the original resolution if you’ll post the same file elsewhere too.

Exact ratios, big photos and HEIC

At original resolution, the output is snapped to a whole multiple of the ratio — a 4:5 crop comes out as, say, 3024×3780, not 3024×3779 — by trimming at most a few pixels from the frame’s edges. With a set longest side, the other side is rounded to the nearest pixel and the panel says so when it is not exact. Output is capped at 16,777,216 pixels (about 16.7 MP), the canvas limit of iPhone and iPad browsers; if your crop is larger, the tool scales it down and shows the final size. iPhone HEIC photos and AVIF files are decoded on your device with the photo’s EXIF rotation applied, and the new file carries no EXIF metadata such as GPS location.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How do I crop an image to a specific aspect ratio?

A: Drop your image, pick a ratio such as 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 (or type a custom width:height), drag the frame to choose what stays, then click Download. The frame always keeps the ratio, and the downloaded file’s pixel size matches it.

Q: What aspect ratio should I use for Instagram?

A: Instagram keeps feed photos uncropped between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 3:4 (portrait), at up to 1080 px wide. 4:5 (1080×1350) and 3:4 (1080×1440) take the most room in the feed, 1:1 (1080×1080) is the classic square, and Stories use 9:16 (1080×1920).

Q: What size and ratio does Etsy want for listing photos?

A: Etsy’s Help Center recommends listing photos at least 2000 px wide and high, with a landscape or square first photo. Etsy doesn’t publish one required ratio; 4:3 landscape (for example 2700×2025) is a common choice. Etsy crops thumbnails, so leave space around the product.

Q: Does this tool upload my photos?

A: No. Decoding, cropping, resizing and ZIP creation run in your browser, and the tool doesn’t upload your images to our servers.

Q: Can I crop several images to the same ratio at once?

A: Yes. Add up to 20 images. Each one is auto-centred at the chosen ratio; click a thumbnail to adjust its frame, then download all of them as a ZIP.

Q: Will a transparent PNG stay transparent?

A: Yes, if you export PNG or WebP. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Etsy shows transparent parts of a PNG as black, so JPG is the safer export for Etsy.

Q: Can I crop iPhone HEIC photos?

A: Yes. HEIC/HEIF and AVIF files are decoded in your browser, with no convert-first step, and the photo’s EXIF rotation is applied. Large iPhone photos can take a few seconds. The cropped file is a new JPG, PNG or WebP without the original EXIF data, such as GPS location.

Q: What happens with very large images?

A: Output is limited to 16,777,216 pixels (about 16.7 megapixels), the canvas limit on iPhone and iPad browsers. If a crop at full resolution would be larger, the tool scales it down and shows you the final size before you download.
